A Meditation on God and Cruelty, ontleed in 40 minuten de beelden waar we mee worden gebombardeerd door een audiovisuele industrie men zich niet van af kan keren. Deze industrie biedt musiek aan die geen musiek is, geweld zonder geweld, pornografie die het niet grafisch wil neer zetten en vragen die geen echte vragen stellen.
The final editing of A Meditation took place just a few weeks before pictures emerged that put an obscene light on the activities of American soldiers in the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, and pictures of the cruel execution of the American soldier Nicholas Berg, butchered before the eye of the camera.
The film does not show how we dream, it shows the collective fever dream, touted night after night on television screens, and it shows what this nightmare looks like when its staging turns away from an imagology that has become common property. Looking at it this way, the film is indeed not only an forensic investigation, but faithful to its title, and for those who wish to accept it above all a meditation on the most extreme (pain) levels of our imagination, and therefore also a meditation on cruelty and God.
