Directors
DAVID CRONENEBERG: king of body horror
This Canadian director had his first big success in 2005 with ‘A history of violence’ with Viggo Mortensen. In 2008 this actor was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Croenbergs ‘Eastern promises’. However those last two pictures can not be regarded as trash or underground, as his earlier work is indeed. His typical trademark is a kind of physical horror that deals with biogenetic processes and good and evil. This hobby-horse of his can already be seen in his debut ‘Shivers’ (1975). This theme seems hard to handle, but Cronenberg gives it a special light touch. The director has built up a vast group of fans that will enjoy to see his earlier work on screen. . JAVI CAMINO The young Spanish director was born in 1982. He grew up in front of the television, where he was brain washed with films, tv-series and anime. Obviously this resulted in making scripts, movies and editing himself. He made two short films ‘La consulta del dr.Natalio’ and ‘7 Homunculos’. At the age of 22 he begins his own production company Datura Films together with Alvaro Novo. Three years later he presents his feature film ‘!Maldito bastardo’. Javi Calmino is a guest at the festival. ADAM WINGARD At the age of 19 the filmmaker makes his debut ‘Home sick’ with Bill Moseley (‘Texas chainsaw massacre’), Tom Towles (‘Henry: portrait of a serial killer’) and Tiffany Shepis (‘Nympha’). Film is in his veins and he wanted to make movies since he was very young. He even did not finish highschool to follow a filmcourse. He has made shortfilms and videoclips to develop his talents. Wingard hates the effort and time to start a filmproject, like finding finance. He hates to be dependent from others, that is why he has several functions. For his second movie ‘Pop skull’ he coproduced, co-wrote, directed and edited. His credo: act normal. ‘Pop skull’co-producer Peter Katz will be guest of the festival. ROBERT PRATTEN Until his 35th year the director was a succesful consultant in the telecom industry. In 2000 he quit his job and starts to study at the London Film School to realise his passion. After that he begins with his wife the production company Zen Films. Four years later he wrote, directed and produced his first feature movie: ‘London Voodoo’. The film won several prices at international festivals. His second movie ‘Mind flesh’ –based on the novel White light by William Scheinman- can be seen at BUTFF. Robert Pratten is guest of the festival. CHRISTIAN VIEL This French-Canadian filmmaker is touched by cinema since he was twelve. He made burlesques of ‘Friday the 13th’, ‘Rambo’ and ‘Slap shot’. He is working in the filmindustry since he was 21. He financed with own money a French spoken police drama, where he finds out that he has swing for action scenes. He makes some short action movies to improve his skill. His name could be found on the internet as referring to the production of ‘Samhain’, a horrormovie with porn actrices Jenna Jameson, Chassey Lain and Ginger Lynn Allen. Shocked by the way distributors and producers mutilated this film, he decided to direct, produce and edit all his next films. Therefore he founded his own productioncompany Movie Seals and made the low budget but ambitious SF-action series ‘Recon’. The two parts are shown at the BUTFF plus the film ‘Deaden’, which he made together with John Fallon. Viel will also give us a preview of his newest film ‘Recon 2023’. Christian Viel and his wife are guests of the festival. CYRUS FRISCH The filmmaker, born in 1968, completed the Dutch filmschool in 1992. He is working as a scriptwriter and director of movies, documentaries and theaterplays. His work is very controversial. In reviews he is even called a ‘narcistic provoker by profession’. The director wants to question the moral of his own films and thereby of the viewer, who is swept back and forth between fascination and disgust but keeps watching. Cyrus Frisch will be at the festival for some days.
A preview of Breda Photo 2008 is the entourage of the BUTFF with photo’s from:
CLAUDIA REINHARDT
Killing me softly- Todesarten The work of Claudia Reinhardt is often intense, harsh and extreme. Her images tell confronting stories in which physical and mental violence prevail, mainly against women. She is more provocative than documenting. In the series ‘Killing me softly’ she resembles herself as famous women who committed suicide. Motive for this series was the shocking news that Sarah Kane, a 27 year old English playwright, killed herself. Reinhardt often shows reality in which she plays the model herself. The shown portraits does not resemble the truth per se, but is more the personal translation of the role and meaning of the main character to the artist. ICHIBA DAISUKE (1963, Japan) The graphic artist and photographer Ichiba Daisuke is influenced by the manga artist George Akiyama and Yokoo Tadanori, the Japanse Andy Warhol. His work shows nightmares and absurd scenes. Those confronting images of madness, pain and sex reflect a strange type of humour. He says to have “an extreme fascination for the useless and the incomprehensible.” Mizue Ezumi is the only person that always shows up in Ichiba’s work, ever since 1997. He sees her as his alter ego, his mother and daughter. A flap before her left eye covers a frightening deformity, which can be seen as a symbol for the befouled heart of mankind. In the series for Breda Photo 2008 Daisuke also plays with such hidden deformations. In trying to achieve beauty Ichiba shows us grotesque elements and apparently useless things to get a balance between good and evil, abnormality and perfection. |
