In the subgenre of the Women in Prison flicks this entry produced by the king of the B-film Roger Corman counts as one its finest. It has all the elements that a WIP flick needs: sadistic prison keepers, a tyrannical female director, wild fights, coarse language and nudity.
Pam Grier plays a lesbian prostitute in her first big role. After this she appeared in other exploitation films like Foxy Brown and Coffy (also directed by Jack Hill) thanks to which she became a household name. In 1997 she made a strong come-back with Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown. Another familiar face in The Big Doll House is the charismatic Sid Haig, who worked with Grier six times.
